seven-point star

There are so many Star symbols out there today.. From the traditional pentagram on up to 9 point, and likely more I haven't seen.

Today our focus is on the seven point star. What I know about it, and what my research has turned up.

The seven-point star is also know as the faerie or elves star and is considered one of the entrances to the faerie relm, or the gateway to the Otherworld.

I see this star in use in the Feri tradition (which differs greatly from faerie. feel free to google both). But I think the star's meaning overlaps,

Here are several prospectives I found.. then mine:

Each point on the star represents a pathway, or the seven rays of manifestation of the higher self as follows:

1st point - Power, Personal Will,

Determination

2nd point - Unconditional Love,

Wisdom, Growth

3rd point - Knowledge, Intelligence

4th point - Harmony, Tranquility

5th point - Powers of mind and Science

6th point - Devotion, Honesty

7th point - Magic

It is also said that the points closely relate with the pentagram, to include earth, air, fire, water, "above & below", and "self"

There are also other correspondence one could draw:

The chakras, the seven planets, days of the week, moon and sun + 5 visible planets, and so on.

I don't know a lot about different pentacles, but I've seen the iron, perl, ect. I'm inclined to think the first example makes sense.. just gut instinct here. But when I look at the seven-point star I always think :

earth, air, fire, water, spirit, above & below, within and without (external to self), and mystery (Center)

So, We've been attending the Local UU church. It's refreshing in that it is far from the dogmatic, repressive baptist church I grew up in. It's a plethora of intermingled religious/spiritual views. Some of the covenants really fit in with (my idea) of paganism.. Specifically:

The inherent worth and dignity of every person

Justice, equality, and compassion in human relations

Acceptance of one another and encouragement to spiritual growth

A free and responsible search for truth and meaning

The goal of world community with peace, liberty and justice for all

Respect for the interdependent web of all existence of which we are a part.

What's nice is there are different groups within the church. There's a pagan group, humanist group, etc.

We've only talked with one or two people there. The group as a whole seems a bit to themselves, but that is likely just our perspective, we're not exactly social butterflies :)

Anyway, it is a nice change, and really one of only two places around here where you can communicate with like minded folks. There is a pagan meeting there tomorrow night. I think we are planning to go.. kind of looking forward to it.

If nothing else it gives us a chance to keep our minds open and operating outside our normally neutral blah state.

goddess festival

Anyone in the fayettville, AR area may want to check out The goddess festival

it's from March 10-27th. We don't see much in the line of pagan
activities here in the bible belt. So when we do I try to support it.

What does music mean to you

What is it that we find so compelling about music?
Is it the word? The beat? Both/neither?

Or is it something else entirely?

For me it's yet another thing that defines and redefines it's self overtime.. and often depends on my state of mind at the time.

I like a good protest tune when I'm angry or just depressed because it seems nothing is going right with the world. I guess it just helps to know that it is a "we" issue instead of just an "I" issue.

Other times I like a hopeful tune.. Like Reclaiming "Let it begin now".

Other times I like a little of everything..except hip-hop or rap..

To me the beat and lyrics have to be right but it must also "move me".. take me to a different state of mind. Get my thoughts flowing or make me almost ecstatic. It's almost spiritual to me..

Sometimes sad songs can do that too. And chants get my energy up.

I do find that I'm not as much into Metallica and other hard core stuff as much now, nor am I really into the mushy stuff.

Don't get me wrong, I still love a tear jerker or bang your head every now and again, just not all the time.

Though I do like music. I'd be hard pressed to imagine life without at least a few minutes of it each day.

So what kind(s) of music really gets you going, and why?

Compassion gets better with age!!

What is compassion?

"sympathetic pity and concern for the sufferings or misfortunes of others"

While that's a good place to start, true compassion is more than just a moment of felt remorse. It can take many forms from a kind word to lift someone's spirits, up to joining the peace core or becoming a humanitarian.

The more compassionate endeavors we involve ourselves with, the more ways we discover to show compassion.

Compassion not only helps those in need, but enriches us as human beings.

Imagine what we could accomplish if more people were compassionate.

Imagine!!

Spring around the corner

Next to winter, spring is one of my favorite times of year. The harvest has long ago ended, we've had time to reflect on the previous years triumphs and failures, and time to ponder new endeavors.

Spring is a time to set these new endeavors into motion. Starting seeds, planting hopes for future bounty. Both physically and metaphorically.

Watching our hopes grow into reality, letting our fears be absolved.

Helping to nourish life, acknowledging that we can help it along, but ultimately we don't control it's destiny. Humbling..
